RE: SB317: An Act Requiring Health Insurance Coverage for Bariatric and
Metabolic Surgery
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this email in support of the above referenced initiative.
My name is ________________________________
I am a resident of the State of Connecticut.
I am a patient who had surgery _____________________ with
_________________________.
Bariatric surgery is a life-saving procedure. Currently bariatric surgery is not a covered benefit on all health insurance plans offered in the State of Connecticut. It is covered by the State Medicaid Plan (Husky) and is covered by the Federal Medicare Program. It should be available to all residents in the State of Connecticut. This is in the best interest of our fellow citizens and your constituents. Bariatric surgery and treatment of morbid obesity can cure diabetes and improve co-morbidities including high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease, and liver disease, just to name a few. Patients who have surgery and lose weight cost less to insure. They are able to stop medications, enjoy better health and therefore spend less time in the offices of healthcare providers. There will be less spending per patient overall. Obesity is not treated like a serious medical condition. If this were cancer, there would be no discussion. There would be no exclusion. Adding this coverage is the RIGHT thing to do, it is compassionate and will save many Connecticut lives. Thank you for your consideration and support.
Sincerely,

Dear Sirs and Ladies:
My name is _________ I am a citizen of Connecticut_______ I have had obesity for _____years I had medical problems that include___________ On _______ I underwent a _______ with Dr. ________ I have lost _______ pounds. The surgery has changed my life. I support PB317 because the Essential Health Benefit in Connecticut does not cover bariatric surgery and many people are unable to undergo lifesaving surgery. The states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island New York and New Jersey all have an Essential Health Benefit that includes coverage of bariatric surgery. It is a burden to the taxpayers of Connecticut as many patients have chronic health conditions in addition to obesity and their health gets worse, requiring more medication and more doctor visits. There is a higher incidence of obesity in African American and Hispanic populations. It is discriminatory to those who have obesity. Medical evidence has demonstrated obesity is caused by genetic, environmental, developmental as well as behavioral factors. Medical evidence has shown that coverage of bariatric surgery by insurance companies results in long-term savings. Treatments for other diseases are not measured according to their profitability or loss. Please move this bill forward to improve the health and safety of our citizens.
Thank You,
